Hitting the high notes

Children who love to sing invited to join Cambridge church choir

Does your child love to sing? If they do, and they are aged 7 and upwards, there’s an opportunity this term to join a fun and friendly Cambridge church choir and learn to sing to a high standard. An open rehearsal is being held on Thursday 18 September at 6.30pm when you can go along and find out more.

The choir of St John the Evangelist Church on Hills Road in Cambridge already has boys and girls amongst its number, singing alongside the adults on Sunday mornings in term time. They are now looking for newcomers to join for an exciting autumn term of singing. The choir learn classical choral pieces to sing as part of the church services, including special music for Remembrance and Christmas. They also give occasional concerts at St John’s and enjoy outings to sing in other locations. In December they are already booked to sing Christmas carols at Wimpole Hall, and in a punt on the River Cam for Let’s Go Punting’s annual fund-raiser.

Elizabeth Trenchard, Director of Music at St John’s, said:

“Singing in a choir is a great way for children to make friends and enjoy learning a new skill. The children and adults in the St John’s Choir follow the RSCM Voice for Life scheme and many children go on to receive National Awards (RSCM Gold Award). There is no audition and no membership fee, and joining this term means that the children can be part of some wonderful Christmas music.”

Rehearsals for the children are held on Thursdays in school term time, from 6.30-7.30pm at St John’s Church. They also sing at the 10am service on Sunday mornings.

Our Sunday morning services begin at 10.00am. When you arrive, you will be greeted by one of our welcoming team who will help you find somewhere to sit and will give you a service booklet and a hymn book. Please see our ‘Sunday services’ page for more details of services and times.
We serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the morning service and we hope very much that you will stay for a chat. All refreshments are free.

You can expect:
- A warm welcome, with everything you need to follow the service easily;
- Beautiful music in the English choral tradition at both Sunday services, led by the St John's choir and organist;
- A talk or sermon, usually focused on the readings we have heard;
- On Sunday and Wednesday mornings, tea or coffee afterwards and time to chat with others.

What about children?
We have a regular Children’s Church on Sunday mornings for 4-11 year-olds. The children learn about the same Bible readings we are hearing in church, with games, activities and prayers. We also have an All-Age service, where everybody worships together, on the first Sunday of each month. Find out more about Children's Ministry
