Our Church council

Parochial Church Council

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) works with the parish priest in promoting the whole mission of the Church in the parish. The PCC has a number of responsibilities, including management of the church finances, buildings and possessions and oversight of worship. The PCC is chaired by the parish priest, and its members are elected at the Annual Parochial Church meeting.

Churchwardens

The church has two churchwardens, who are responsible for many areas of church life on a day-to-day basis, and who support the work of the parish priest and congregation. The churchwardens are elected annually, and are members of the PCC.

Other officers

Other elected officers of the PCC include the Secretary, the Treasurer and the Electoral Roll Officer. The PCC membership also includes the church's two representatives on the Deanery Synod, the forum for churches in the local area (Cambridge South Deanery) to exchange views on matters affecting the Deanery.

Subcommittees

A lot of the work of the PCC is delegated to subcommittees, who will co-opt membership from the church in order to widen the representation and to bring in expertise. The principal subcommittees at St John's include:

  1. Finance: responsible for advising the PCC on the financial management of the church.
  2. Overseas Mission: responsible for all aspects of mission links with other churches and other mission agencies.
  3. Mission Action Plan: responsible for the longterm planning of the church's mission strategy.
  4. Administration and Management: responsible for the maintenance of the church buildings and room hire, compliance with statutory requirements including Health and Safety issues, and employee issues.
  5. Children and Youth Work: responsible for oversight of the work with children and young people, with a role of advocacy for this age group. The committee is also responsible for advising the PCC on the implementation of the child protection policy, including ensuring that all people working with young people and children are checked by the Criminal Records Bureau.
  6. Employment: manages the PCC's responsibilities as an employer.
